The Gombe National Industrial Court has succeeded in dissolving the executive council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Bauchi State University, Gadau Chapter after its leadership refused to leave office on the conclusion of its 2-year tenure.

Ibrahim Danjuma, a lecturer in the varsity filed the suit, it was marked NICN/Bau/05/2022 and challenged the respondents for poking nose into the electoral process scheduled to produce the new leaders of the BASUG Chapter of the union; overstaying in office as well as abandoning their responsibility of conducting an election for the chapter as detailed by the Congress.

The respondents in the case are the ASUU National President, Emmanuel Osodeke, Bauchi Zonal Coordinator of the union, Professor Lawan Abubakar, the Chairman, Bauchi State University chapter of the association, Dr. Yusuf Musa Yahaya; BASU ASUU executives and its constituted electoral committee.

In the judgement delivered on Thursday 16th June, 2022, the court ordered that Dr. Yahaya-led executive should vacate office on or before 16th August, 2022.

Justice Mustapha Tijjani, the trial judge mandated that the electoral committee proceeds with the process of electing a new set of leaders for the association.

Justice Tijjani also restrained the national president, Professor Osodeke and the Bauchi Zonal head of the union from further seeing Dr. Yahaya and other members of his executive as the official leaders of the union at the Bauchi State University, Gadau, Bauchi.

The court further cautioned the national or zonal leadership from poking nose into the process that produces the new leaders of the association.

DAILY POST reports that Dr Danjuma instituted the suit following the electoral committee’s abandonment of its assignment barely 24 hours before the slated election day.

The committee was alleged to have abandoned the assignment as a result of interference by the national leadership of the union, which was alleged to have been sympathetic to the Dr Yahaya-led executive council of the university.
