A priest of the Roman Catholic Church went through to trial in the German city of Cologne on Tuesday. This was owing to his incessant abuse of children.

The 70-year-old priest was leveled with the allegation of sexually abusing his 3 nieces in the Western town of Gummersbach in the 1990s.

He is charged on 31 counts, three of which the public prosecutor describes as particularly serious.

The abused children were within the age range of seven and 13 at the time. He further abused an 11-year-old girl at Wuppertal in 2011. This was when she visited the priest with a friend.

The public prosecutor’s office brought charges in this case just more than two weeks ago.

The court has now combined the two proceedings.

At the request of the Defence, the trials had been arranged to be behind closed doors.

The Defence Counsel opined that the allegations against his client are targeted at his private life and not his religious calling as a priest.

The court is expected to call on Hamburg Archbishop Stefan Hesse as a witness during the trial.

The accused, once served as the head of personnel in the archdiocese of Cologne.

According to a court spokesperson, he has been summoned for Jan. 18, 2022.(dpa/NAN)
