Detained Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo Igboho is according to reports clocking 49 tomorrow and at the prison of Benin Republic. This is where he is currently facing immigration-related offences.
The 1972-born Igboho hails from Igboho, in the Oke Ogun Area of Oyo State. He was said to have attained prominence owing to his valiant role in the Modakeke-Ife Communal Crisis in 1997.
The Yoruba activist identified with mystical powers, was said have stood his ground against the oppression against his people. He also don the title of the “Akoni Oodua.
He strayed into limelight around January, shortly after he gave the killer herdsmen troubling his town an 7-day-ultimatum to vacate the ancient town.
He accused the Fulani herders of being culpable of the offences resulting in the termination of innocent lives, rape and kidnappings.
He was said to have facilitated rallies across the southwestern states, the States are: Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, and Ogun states.
He landed into trouble after he ran into the operatives of the Brigade Criminelle on the 19th day of July, in Benin Republic.
His house based in Ibadan had been earlier raided by the operatives of the Department of State Services, terminating the precious lives of two of his aides, including 12 others who were arrested.
After hiding for 19 days, he ran into the hands of those who arrested him.
The last judgement of the court where Igboho was arraigned ordered his detention in prison. One of his lawyers, Ibrahim Salami, while addressing BBC on the case said the activist is currently sick.
The Media aide to Igboho, Olayomi Koiki, stated during the week that his boss needs urgent medical attention.
He revealed that the activist is currently suffering from the injuries he secured in the course of the raid on his house.
He also said due to his complicated health, he likes to travel to Germany for further treatments and operations.
It is quite a serious condition. He does not want to seek medical attention in Cotonou. Very soon, the court will determine his case, and he will travel to Germany”, he said
On why Igboho’s case has been delayed, he said “The laws in Benin Republic is different from Nigeria, the court that is presiding over Igboho’s case is investigating the issues against him, the lawyer that was handling his case had earlier went on vacation which delayed his case.
“Investigation is still ongoing, we are working assiduously to ensure his release.”
Igboho through his lawyer stated that he was displeased to hear that the president stated that he was funded by some persons.
He described it as unfounded, and that when he’s released from detention, he will make necessary clarifications.
