Abraham Umuibe, of the Mpape Government Secondary School, has been surprisingly mandated to sweep the premises of his school for ninety days. This was after he was caught, found guilty by the court for duping a Chinese woman of her whooping sum of N113,000.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has earlier levelled two strong allegations against Umuibe, they range from cheating to falsely presenting himself as a Chinese and military officer. He deliberately misrepresented himself as Maisbay Chang.
The judge, Kezziah Ogbonaya, ruled in line with non-custodial sentencing geared towards decongesting the prisons. No wonder she ordered the prison warders open a register for Umuibe’s signatures each day, as he is expected to report daily for ninety days.
She cautioned him against indulging in criminal activities but good behaviours. This was after the counsel to the Defence identified him as a first time offender, with earlier clean records. Though tactically objected to by the Prosecuting Counsel, Ijeabulum Diribe, who confirmed a plea bargain signed between his client and the fraudster.
Diribe pleaded with the court to convict the accused in tandem with the agreement between both parties, which states he should pay despite his conviction.
“The defendant has repented and refunded everything he collected from the crime,’’ Mamza said.
The fraud perpetrated on the WeChat app contravened the provisions of section 95 of the Penal Code.
