The Niger State government opened up today on how it had been dealing with the abduction carried out by some suspected bandits at the Salihu Tanko Islamic School, Tegina, Rafi Local governmentArea of Niger State. The action was carried out on the 31st June, 2020.
The government confirmed that it is aware that some of the parents have been reaching out to the bandits for negotiation, he insisted and remained resolute on reasons why it would not approach any bandit with monetary inducements (Ransome)
The Deputy Governor, Muhammed Ketso while granting an interview on Wednesday, as to the direction of the abducted pupils, says “Niger State Government is negotiating the release of the abductees and we are confident that in no distant time, the pupils will be united with their parents.
“Government is in touch with some of the parents of the kidnapped children, they have been assured of the safe return of their wards,” he said.
He debunked the news that 200 children were abducted but rather 163, including some staff who were kidnapped alongside, “Government has established contacts with the abductors”, he said. He assured the people that the pupils would soon be recovered from the hands of those who abducted them, in as much as they will also be reunited with their parents. All boarding schools have been stopped from operating as boarding schools until the state is deemed safe. Commercial Motorcycles would not work in Minna as from 3rd June, 2020, except for the private ones.
In his words, “These are parts of measures being put in place by the government towards addressing the rising security situation in the state, especially Minna, the state capital,” he seized the medium in expressing the readiness of government to support security operatives with the necessary logistics to do their job.
“We have so far given 89 operational vehicles, 283 operational motorcycles, 30 bicycles, four tri-cycles in addition to funding the various security operations in the state.
“These are in addition to 70 vehicles and 2,300 motorcycles as mobility support for the vigilante corps in the state,” Mr Ketsu said.
